Dai Nakamura (b. 1970, Hokkaido, Japan) is a Japanese photographer whose work explores the quiet, often unspoken space between perception and memory. Working primarily in black and white, his photographs reflect a deep sensitivity to mood, atmosphere, and the subtle tensions of everyday life.

Nakamura moved to the United States in the early 1990s to study filmmaking. It was during a photojournalism class that he discovered the expressive potential of photography, a shift that led him to pursue a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he graduated in 1997. That same year, he began working as an assistant to renowned contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto in New York, an experience that further shaped his philosophical and visual approach to image-making.

Though Nakamura’s practice is informed by traditional Japanese aesthetics such as wabi-sabi and mono no aware, these ideas surface not as cultural references, rather as quiet truths embodied in the way he frames light, space, and impermanence.

His series often examine the interplay between human presence and environment: urban stillness, fleeting gestures, and the lingering poetry of overlooked moments.

Nakamura has exhibited internationally, and his work is held in both private and institutional collections worldwide, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has received several awards, including the 20th Pollux Award and The London Photography Award. With a practice grounded in patience and subtlety, Dai Nakamura continues to create work that invites the viewer into a deeper contemplation of time and place.

ダイ・ナカムラ（1970年、北海道生まれ）は、知覚と記憶のあいだにある静かでしばしば言葉にされない空間を探求する日本人写真家です。主にモノクロで制作される彼の写真は、雰囲気や空気感、そして日常の中に潜む繊細な緊張感に対する深い感受性を反映しています。

ナカムラは1990年代初頭に渡米し、映画制作を学びました。ある写真報道の授業で写真の持つ表現力に魅了され、写真への転向を決意。ロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザイン（RISD）で美術学士号（BFA）を取得し、1997年に卒業しました。同年、ニューヨークで現代美術家・杉本博司のアシスタントとして働き始め、その経験が彼の哲学的かつ視覚的なアプローチをさらに深めることとなります。

ナカムラの制作には、侘び寂びやもののあわれといった日本の伝統的美学が影響を与えていますが、それらは文化的な参照としてではなく、光や空間、無常をとらえるその眼差しの中に静かな真理として自然に現れます。彼のシリーズはしばしば、人間の存在と環境との相互作用――都市の静寂、一瞬のしぐさ、見過ごされがちな瞬間の詩情――を見つめています。

ナカムラは国際的に展示を行っており、その作品はボストン美術館をはじめ、世界中の個人および公共のコレクションに収蔵されています。また、**第20回ポラックス賞（Pollux Award）およびロンドン写真賞（The London Photography Award）**など、数々の賞を受賞しています。忍耐と繊細さに根ざしたその制作を通じて、ダイ・ナカムラは今もなお、私たちを時と場所への深い思索へと誘います。
