Originally from the Basque country, Balu is a multidisciplinary artist who has been living and working in Barcelona for over a decade. The artist makes works of decontextuization, transmutation and transfiguration, using theoretical avant-garde concepts such as the dadaist principle of the Ready-Made as the grounding for his work.
In these pieces the artist appropriates public space and the elements that configure it. Street signage, urban furniture, billboards  and advertising found in the canopies of the city, Balu removes them from the context for which they were created and assigns new meaning and status. The artist changes the significance of materials and techniques, espousing upon them a different value and language. These recontextualized works are often re-introduced into the sphere of public domain, to subvert and challenge a multitude of issues from copyright to ownership of visual and public space whilst simultaneously paying homage to the subtle, often unnoticed elements of beauty created by the properties of urban existence.

Balu es un artista multidisciplinar vasco afincado en la ciudad de Barcelona desde hace más de una década. El artista realiza obras gracias a la descontextualización, transmutación y transfiguración, conceptos teóricos herederos de vanguardias como el
Ready-Made sobre los que gira su trabajo en los últimos tiempos.
En estos trabajos el artista se apropia del espacio público y de los elementos que lo configuran, tales como la cartelería que podemos encontrar en las marquesinas de la ciudad, el mobiliario urban, etc., sacándolos del contexto para el cual han sido
creados, llevándolos a otro marco y asignándoles una significación ajena a su origen y un estatus de testimonio de la acción artística primordial, la desarrollada en la ciudad. De esta manera el artista cambia la significación de los materiales y las técnicas, dotándolos de un valor y un lenguaje distinto al que les es propio y original en su contexto.
